As I understand when you are a giant or almost one, probably, it is very hard to see and consider small beings around you, and sometimes it is even not so important to think about them!
But how can a giant be a giant when new, far and small but interesting worlds that he wants to conquer, speak differently than he speaks, and therefore reject the misunderstood stranger!

Yes, of course, brands prepare themselves for new markets and carry out brand adaptation, but not all and not for all markets!

And it’s a shame!

Below I will give life examples of that!

I can tell that people laugh and also see disgrace in it!
Real and tough problems arise in a Brand’s life evolution when covering new markets means solving Cross-culture obstacle.
But world and people still speak different languages and live different cultures while making shopping!
So, I address this article to the below mentioned brands, TMs and companies that, by some reasons, forgot to check all points in their market map and ensure that their Brand Identity and Message are correctly understood in all markets.
I hope it will make a positive resonance!

Dear mentioned Brands, did you know about the following?

You didn’t pass adaptation in…

1. “Sula” candies produced by Perfetti Van Melle Company.

Word “sula” is a noun written, read as is and understood in Romanian language as “dick” in an obscene manner. And “Sula” candies are sold in Moldova shops and supermarkets, where local people also speak Romanian language like in Romania.

2. Cream Cheese “Viola” by Valio food Company from Finland.

Word “viola” is a verb written, read as is and understood in Romanian language as “to violate and to rape” if translated. I’d say – Wow, how nice! Especially when testing in supermarkets in organized, in Moldova capital, where Romanian is spoken.

3. “Super Huevo” Mexican food brand.

These two Spanish words are sometimes even read incorrectly and associated in Russian language with the following: super = super, but word “huevo” (obscene) = “f…cking bad”, if translated. So all in all it makes “super f…king bad”. This brand products are sold in Russia.

4. “Osram” German Company for Lighting Products.

“O sram” is read incorrectly and understood in Russian language as “Oh! Shame. Oh! Disgrace.”, if translated. But still, this brand products are sold in Russia.

5. Medicine “Trachisan” by Engelhard Arzneimittel GmbH Co.

Word “trachisan” is related in Russian language with obscene “f…ck”. This brand products are sold in Russia.

6. Also, medicine “Ibufen” (international name “Ibuprofen”).

Is produced by many European pharmaceutical companies. This one, also obscene, is understood in Russian, you couldn’t imagine this, if translated than it would mean “f…cking a hair-drier”! And “Ibufen” is largely sold in Russian drug stores.

7. Puledro Clothing for kids and teenagers of all ages.

I don’t really like repeating it, so, I’ll just say that word “pule”, a plural noun, is written and read as is, and has tha same obscene meaning in Romanian language, like in the very first example written above, so is a curse. The only fact that excuses somehow this TM is that it’s not officially represented and sold in Moldova, though it is sold in a well known commercial centre for kids in the capital, but the TM heads don’t even suspect about something like this.

8. Sunflower Seeds “ZARAZA”.

Word “Zaraza” is translated from Russian language as “contagion, infection”, and as you see the producer writes it with Latin letters.
This example, I would say, looks like a total opposition to the above “successful participants”.
And though its name should instantly reject any consumer, the enclosed sense reflects a totally real and close “phenomenon” that is experienced knowingly or not by a loyal consumer of sunflower seeds, and brings the consumer on a new level of understanding of his merited and true place, his importance and contribution.

The producer speaks and addresses very honestly to his consumer, no more uncertainties, let’s be open!
On the backside of the package there’s something very interesting written in Romanian already, I’ll try to translate, though there are some expression errors:

“Attention!
Contaminating a / being contaminated by a Contagion, it is very difficult to defeat it. Before you open the package – think twice!”

But just one lack of clarity I see: who or what is the “Contagion”? – The content of the package or the one that consumes the content of the package???
And I wonder – what is the reaction of the consumer to such straightforward interpretation?!

And what about local authorities, they don’t really care about it too?!

But imagine that Russian is spoken and understood in many other ex-soviet countries that sometimes are very attractive new markets for Western Brands! Romanian – mainly spoken in Romania and Moldova. But what about Romanian and Russian growing communities all over the world! Do they care about it or no?

Is it possible and necessary to prevent all these?!

“Golden rules” beacause of their high importance and their feature of elementary or just a “must know”!

1) GWD development means designing web page layouts for a future web site.

Usually, a graphic designer makes several such pages: Main Page layout and one Internal Page layout, but more complex projects, speaking in general, require: Splash Page layout, Main Page layout, several Internal Page layouts such as: News Page, Product Page, Gallery Page etc. All pages are worked out ready for nesting. So, graphic designer supplies only graphical output of a future web site, it’s page layouts in special files, plus sometimes nesting files. All future web development activities like: Internet installation and final testing, programming, compiling and SEO for this future web site are all tasks of other web development specialists, with whom certainly, the Designer communicates or is related to certain extent.

2) GWD development, being integral part of a web site – is a purposeful marketing activity,

supported by real and planned: budget, terms, and active-productive cooperation and assistance between the Customer and Designer.

3) Page layout – isn’t just a set or composition of nice images, text, buttons etc. – it is what your client communicates with and how the visitor / user understands You / Your Company in the Internet.

Therefore, a competently developed GWD must be implemented in harmony / accordance with the Company house style, a qualitative design encloses certain marketing objectives and destination, certain usability, appearance, status and Company reputation. And all these key elements are taken into consideration by Designer when working on GWD and are enclosed in Requirements Specification (abb. RS) which define future result and collaboration!

4) Let’s start partnership between us: the Customer and the Designer, with the correctly and detailed drawn up of RS!

Development of GWD without such an RS, speaking figuratively, is just like preparing an unknown and strange course without observing the recipe, where the Client-User, can simply poison himself. I.e., as You see, in this case the Client may have a negative experience towards Your web site, and this can not be allowed. That’s why seriousness and full attention must be devoted. Since Your web site – is how you’re positioning Your Company on the internet market, how You distinguish Yourself and what You are remarkable for, this is Your individuality, Your goals, and therefore – Your Success!

5) A smart design is – a continuously working and improving design.

Your web site is an interactive communication instrument with your target group and site reach. And in the natural course of internet market evolution, your site must evolve as well. Here an important role plays especially visitors’ / clients’ opinion, during the execution of various tasks and operations within Your web site, and their opinion will indicate real shortcomings / inconveniences in graphic design and in web site as a whole. In this sense, it is useful to curry out tests of Your site usability for and by site visitors. But – vitally that Web Designer and Web Developer make their own tests for it and analyze users answers as well, and later propose solutions and recommendations. Exactly in this way Your site working should be maintained and supported, new ideas and suggestions may occur both from Your side and from the clientele side.

6) Design – isn’t just an image that must please solely Yourself, own leadership / directors, since often they are not the target group.

And the Designer – isn’t a magician and mind reader to guess Customer’s thoughts and obey absolutely to all his demands, ideas and wishes. You as Customer – a professional of Your business apply to Developer, who is a professional of his own job area as well, and here the Customer informs the Designer about his needs and tasks, and the Designer proposes solutions and gives advises, within the bounds of his profession.

7) There must be only friendly, frankly and trustworthy relations between the Parties – the Customer and the Designer. And more or less business ethics, according to situation, is never superfluous.

My advantages as Designer are – responsibility and terms observance, interest in qualitative completion of each project, since it is my reputation and success, and therefore Client’s success. The Customer must understand that on his assistance, as well, depends how correctly the Designer will understand the problems set and how successfully he will accomplish the project.

Main idea and his request was, of course, to keep the spirit and the similarity, but to add: life, color, volume, positive look, nice background and some clothes.

So, I did it all very carefully and here is the result:

I really like both characters, my respect to them!

Behind an image is visualization of an Idea.

Life is full of personages around us but some of them manage to catch our attention for being interesting and original – for having character inside, for the idea behind the image.
So, let’s take a look at how an idea becomes a Real Visualized Image in several simplified steps.
I have a good example of an Idea that once came into my head and there I took the pencil into my hand and…
The graphical features of the drawn character emphasize its personality. You can see it on the Sketch Stage 1.
So we have a start point – general but exact appearance of a “Who” is going to become a real Personage.

Then, taking into consideration our Computerized Internetized world ))) and our wish to improve the image and use it later also for printing, we need to transform it into a Vector Image using Corel Draw.

So, you see how the vector line is drawn following the pencil sketch.
I improved the vector silhouette where it was necessary.
The different colors lines define the separate vector parts drawn – vector details, which in totality form the whole image. So, that you could – it’s not one single line defining the silhouette but a number of, and sometimes they are very many.

The more vector details has the image the more complicated and sometimes realistic is the resulted image.

Now, getting impatient to see it in color, finally!

I like the eyes a little bit smaller than on the sketch, when seeing it in color.
And, when seeing it in color some other parts of the Horse Bust can be improved, otherwise it’s not so obvious.

Now adding volume, texture, individual characteristic details and there it is – Ready Horse Bust Personage.
